Can You Laser Cut Aluminium? Here's What You Need to Know
We get this question all the time: Can you laser cut aluminium?
The answer is yes—and we do it regularly. Whether you're after brackets, panels, signs or covers, aluminium is a great material choice for laser cutting thanks to its clean finish and lightweight strength.
Here’s what you need to know before ordering.
1. Yes, We Can Cut Aluminium
Our laser cutting machines are equipped to handle aluminium with precision. Common uses include:
-
Automotive and 4WD parts
-
Electrical or control panels
-
Decorative pieces
-
Structural components for lightweight builds
We most commonly cut 1.6mm, 3mm and 4mm aluminium, but other thicknesses can be quoted on request.
2. Choose In-Stock Materials for Fast Turnaround
We keep certain aluminium sheets in stock, which are available to select in our online quoting tool. These options offer:
-
Faster turnaround (standard: 5 business days)
-
Best pricing
-
No special order delays
If you need a thickness or alloy that’s not listed, we can order it in—but it will add to your lead time and cost.
3. Edge Finish & Cleanliness
Aluminium cuts cleanly, but the edge finish can vary slightly depending on thickness and grade. Generally, you can expect:
-
Minimal burrs (light sanding optional)
-
No discolouration or burn marks
-
No need for grinding or post-processing on standard jobs
4. CNC Folding Available for Aluminium
Need your aluminium part folded as well? We can help.
Although our online quote tool doesn’t currently support folding, we can add it manually to your order. Just send through a folding drawing when submitting your file and we’ll include it in the quote.
5. File Requirements for Aluminium Cutting
Just like any other laser cutting job, aluminium parts require a clean DXF file to quote and cut correctly.
Not sure what that means? Here’s the breakdown:
-
One DXF file per part
-
All paths must be closed and scaled correctly (usually in mm)
-
If you don’t have a DXF, we can create one from a detailed drawing (small fee applies)
For best pricing and speed, uploading a ready-to-go DXF file is the way to go.
In Summary:
-
Yes, we cut aluminium—regularly and accurately
-
In-stock materials = faster and cheaper
-
Clean edges, lightweight, strong
-
DXF file required for quoting
-
Folding available by request
