Can You Laser Cut Stainless Steel? Here’s What to Know

Stainless steel is durable, corrosion-resistant, and looks sharp—but can it be laser cut?

Absolutely. At Flamin Fabrications, we regularly laser cut stainless steel for everything from signage and splashbacks to brackets and custom parts.

But before you upload your file, here’s what you need to know.

1. Yes, Stainless Steel Can Be Laser Cut

We commonly cut stainless steel up to 6mm thick, and can quote other thicknesses upon request.

Stainless is a great option for:

  • Clean decorative finishes

  • Marine or weather-resistant components

  • Food-grade and hygiene-critical parts

  • High-strength brackets or panels

And it cuts cleanly with minimal edge cleanup required.

2. We Keep Some In Stock—but Often Special Order for Quality

We do keep some stainless steel on hand, but for jobs where surface finish is critical or larger quantities are needed, we often special order the material. This ensures:

  • Pristine, undamaged sheets

  • Correct grade and finish for your application

  • Consistency across your entire job

If the material you need isn’t listed in our quote tool, just get in touch—we’ll source it and add it to your job.

3. Stainless Finishes Available

We can supply and cut a range of stainless finishes, including:

  • #4 Brushed Finish – Ideal for visible surfaces like panels or cabinetry

  • 2B Mill Finish – More industrial, suitable for functional parts

  • BA (Bright Annealed) – Mirror-like finish for high-end applications

Just let us know what finish you need when ordering—we’ll make sure it’s right for the job.

4. Clean Cuts, Protected Surfaces

Laser cutting stainless steel results in:

  • Bright, smooth edges

  • Minimal to no heat tinting

  • Clean appearance without grinding

To protect the surface, we leave the protective film on where possible during cutting—this helps avoid scratches or handling damage, especially for brushed or polished finishes.

5. We Can Etch Into Stainless Too

Need part numbers, labels, or branding?
We can etch directly into stainless steel for a clean, permanent mark.

Etching is ideal for:

  • Logos or product IDs

  • Installation guides or alignment marks

  • Numbering parts for batching or assembly

Just include a note when submitting your file if you’d like this added.

6. Design Tips for Stainless Steel

As with all materials:

  • Keep holes and cut-outs equal to or larger than material thickness

  • Submit clean DXF files in millimetres with closed paths

  • Avoid overly detailed features on thicker stainless

Need folding as well? No problem—just include your folding specs and we’ll check compatibility with the grade and thickness.

In Summary:

  • Yes, we laser cut stainless—up to 6mm standard

  • Some stock is on hand; we often special order for quality

  • Multiple finish options available

  • Protective film is left on when possible

  • Etching is available for logos, labels, and guides
